General Tips

Browsers: Video conferences currently work best using the Chrome / Chromium browser.

Drops in audio and video: Brief drops in audio and video are completely normal. However, if several participants have permanent problems, then you should first reduce the video quality. You can use the three dots in the lower right corner to call up the quality settings and reduce the video quality. If this has no effect either, you should proceed as follows:

  • Does one of the participants use the Firefox browser? Then the participant should switch to the Chrome or Chromium browser. The partially incorrect implementation of WebRTC within the Firefox browser unfortunately often causes problems within video conferences.
  • No file sharing, streaming etc. - at least for the duration of the video conference. You should make sure that there is enough bandwidth available for downloading and uploading.

Echo or loud squeaking noises: The feedback effect often occurs during a video conference - i.e. a loud squeaking. A headset or headphones with a separate microphone can help.

Browser Issues

Problems can arise in practice depending on the browser version and the installed add-ons. Possible difficulties:

  • WebRTC deactivated: You can prevent the release of the local IP address via WebRTC using add-ons such as uBlock Origin or interventions in the browser. If such add-ons or settings are active, a video conference will not work.
  • No access to webcam: When entering a conference it can happen that the browser does not have authorization or access to the webcam (camera & microphone). What could help: close the browser, reopen it and re-enter the conference.
  • Firefox version 71 and higher: Unfortunately, video and audio problems often occur in current Firefox versions. The developers of Jitsi Meet are aware of the problem and are already working on a solution - but this will not appear in the short term. If you have problems with current Firefox versions, we recommend using the extended support release version of Firefox or switching to Chrome / Chromium.

Networking Issues

If you filter outgoing network connections with a desktop or network firewall, the following ports need to be open (for both domains) to allow traffic to the Jitsi Meet server:
